This summer, the College’s Dean’s Office welcomed two new leaders to Carolina: Jacob Bacharach and Ian F. McNeely.
Bacharach is the senior associate dean for operations and strategy. He provides strategic direction and leadership in the management of resources within the College. He serves as an adviser to the dean on all matters relating to finance, budget planning, resource reallocation, the design and implementation of technology plans, the processing of personnel materials and capital planning.
Bacharach comes to Carolina from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy where he most recently served as assistant dean and chief business officer. He has more than 15 years of experience in leadership capacities across the higher education, nonprofit, performing arts and economic development sectors.
McNeely is the senior associate dean for undergraduate education. He comes to UNC from the University of Oregon, where he served as the inaugural associate dean for undergraduate education. In this role, he coordinated 45 degree programs that served 11,000 majors and reinvigorated the general education curriculum.
McNeely was part of Oregon’s faculty for over 20 years. His research areas include European history, world history and the history of knowledge, and he has authored four books exploring various aspects of those topics. At Carolina, he joins the history faculty.
In his leadership role, McNeely oversees the College’s programs in undergraduate education, including Thrive Advising Hubs, Undergraduate Research, the Center for Student Success, Undergraduate Curricula (including First Year Seminars) and Honors Carolina, among others.
