Archaeologists recently uncovered a clue that doesn’t shed light on what happened to the colonists of the Lost Colony, but it may reveal more about their life on the island.

UNC cultural anthropologist Colin Thor West became interested in the lives of rural farmers and the challenges they face when he served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Togo, West Africa, from 1994 to 1996.

UNC anthropologist Silvia Tomášková spent 2010 to 2011 in South Africa studying prehistoric rock art drawings as part of the research for her book, “Wayward Shamans: The Prehistory of an Idea.”
